ISO 9001: What Does it Mean and Why It Helps You

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Do you want to show your customers that your company means business and that you are doing everything in your power to provide them with quality products and services that will meet their needs? Then you are going to want to work with a company that is ISO 9001 quality-certified.

ISO 9001 certification can be applied to any organization, regardless of how big or small it is, and more than a million organizations from all around the world have applied for it in the past. The ISO – the International Organization for Standardization – is an independent organization that is in charge of handing out ISO certifications. It can certify that your company has a quality management system in place and that it does things like organize processes and improve the overall efficiency of those processes while continually providing consistent and high-quality products.

To obtain ISO 9001 certification, a company must start by committing to it and appointing an internal project manager who is devoted to overseeing the process. This manager must allocate resources towards obtaining ISO 9001 certification and work toward developing a quality management system that is specific to your company. Developing processes, procedures and other quality controls designed to improve your products and services is an essential part of seeking ISO 9001 certification.

This will take time and effort on the part of your entire company. Many times, companies devote three to six months to doing it, but this certification process results in a top-notch quality control system. This system can then be internally and externally audited, with final review performed by an external auditor will ultimately check out the quality management system to determine whether or not it meets the ISO 9001 guidelines.

Once this process is completed and the quality management system in place is determined to meet ISO standards, a company receives ISO 9001 certification from the ISO organization. ISO 9001 certification lasts for three years and must be reinspected by an external auditor to receive accreditation once again.
